Cameras Set to Roll on GSN and FOX SPORTS Series in November

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Television's hottest game returns to the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for two made-for-television poker games featuring some of the biggest names in poker.

MASHANTUCKET--The American poker craze is far from over. Just ask Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Foxwoods officials announced Wednesday the casino will expand and upgrade its poker room with a nearly 50 percent increase in poker tables. The expansion, which will bring the table total to 114, is scheduled to open next spring.

The announcement comes as the casino begins hosting the World Poker Finals today, where diehard gamblers and hopeful poker players already have begun signing up for buy-in satellite tournaments. Foxwoods hosts televised poker tournament events with million-dollar stakes each year, in addition to its smaller weekly tournaments.

Kathy Raymond, director of poker operations, said Foxwoods has been discussing a poker expansion for "a while," after observing the growth of the poker industry. The poker room will increase by one-third after it trades floor space with 650 slot machines directly below it.

On weekends, the poker room's 76, 10-seat tables are at about 100 percent capacity, Mark Rathbun, poker room day shift manager, said. Weekday capacity runs about 85 percent. In a typical 8-hour work shift, Rathbun sees about 2,000 players in the poker room.

The new smoke-free room and tables will be designed to accommodate more players and ease game sign-up lines. New poker tables will include technological upgrades such as LED table components, automatic card shufflers and electronic seat monitoring system to speed the seat turnover rate.

Foxwoods is now the only poker venue in New England, casino officials said. Mohegan Sun replaced its 39 poker tables with slot machines in 2003.

A poker player from Bermuda gave some of the top names in the high stakes poker game a run for their chips when he made it to the final table of the US Poker Championships .

Chris Furbert finished in sixth place in the No Limit Texas Hold'em event held in Atlantic City - winning a whopping $76,387.

He was one of nine poker players to survive from the starting field of 225 who were all playing for a first prize of $831,532.

Lady Luck seemed to be on Mr. Furbert's side as he took seat number three at the final table on October 9 with a starting chip count of 443,000.

But despite some spirited poker play , he was knocked out by the eventual tournament winner, James Caporuscio.

Both Mr. Furbert and the eventual winner went "all in" before the flop while each holding Ace-King.

Mr. Furbert and Mr. Caporuscio looked set to split the pot until the final card, "the river", was turned and Caporuscio hit a flush.

Before heading to the final table, Mr. Furbert told ESPN correspondent Steve Rosenbloom he had won a $225 satellite poker event at the Trump Taj hotel to get into the event.

Mr. Furbert also told ESPN it was the first time in five tries that he had got into a $10,000 buy-in poker event .

Mr. Furbert shared the final table with several well known poker pros including Men "The Master" Nguyen, who finished in the fifth spot, and John Juanda, who finished eighth. The poker tournament will eventually be broadcast on ESPN TV.

ATLANTA - Years ago, ESPN tried showing the World Series of Poker, and someone said that poker was as exciting as watching bears hibernate. Now, it's World Series of Poker time again, but now it's glitz city, baaaaay-bee: hyped-up announcers, high drama, wacko nicknames, huge prizes, everything but cheerleaders. And you won't have to wait long for them, probably. Originally called a "lipstick camera" because of its size and shape, ESPN now calls theirs the "Milwaukee's Best Light (Beer) Pocket Cam." Same device, mucho more macho name. And any outcry that they're over-commercializing poker has been drowned out by the coast-to-coast ka-chinging of the poker craze. Poker is now the third-most-popular sport on cable TV, after football and cars driving in a circle real fast. It airs on at least six different cable channels with a dizzying variety of shows. Internet poker sites have ballooned to way over $1 billion a year (despite that pesky illegality), and you can't drive down a major road anywhere without seeing some bar advertising Texas Hold 'Em Night. All because of that little lipstick cam, which lets the home audience see what the others can't, and figure out who's bluffing and who has a real hand. With all the televised poker, now poker is the main event. The TV ratings of the 2005 World Series of Poker which air thru November prove it, even though the event took place in July and the the winner is widely known.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana is losing thousands of dollars each day in taxes as three New Orleans area riverboat casinos sit idle and thousands of video poker machines remain off-line, in some instances underwater and damaged beyond repair by Hurricane Katrina.

Employees are displaced, and reopening dates are sketchy at best, the state's gambling regulatory board was told Tuesday as it received an early assessment of the hurricane's damage to an industry that provides tax income to the state and thousands of its residents.

The video poker industry was particularly hard hit, with 31 percent of the video poker machines - that provide $4.6 million a month in state tax revenue - located in parishes affected by Katrina.

Significant numbers of restaurant and bar owners that own video poker machines, many of them tiny, local establishments, are unable even to assess their property in the flooded and potentially hazardous parishes of Orleans, St. Bernard and Plaquemines.

Nearly 3,800 machines of about 5,000 that went down during and after the hurricane still aren't operating, according to state police. And machines that took in water during the flooding won't work even when the power is restored.

"The situation for us is very bleak," Alton Ashy, a lobbyist for the video poker industry, told the Louisiana Gaming Control Board.

Three of the state's 15 floating casinos are moored in parishes harmed by the hurricane and have been closed since Aug. 28.

However, the damage to Louisiana's casinos is slight compared to its neighboring state. In Mississippi, most of the 12 casinos in Biloxi, Gulfport and Bay St. Louis were heavily damaged, as was the 13th casino that originally was to open this month. The barge casinos there were ripped out of the water and tossed across roads, starting a debate over whether to allow casinos on land.

In Louisiana, the Belle of Orleans - formerly Bally's Casino in New Orleans - seemed to have been the hardest hit riverboat casino. The storm pushed the gambling hall on Lake Pontchartrain off its moorings and forced water into the boat's hull, damaging computer systems and the boat's generator, according to Gonzalo Hernandez, the casino's general manager.

Officials with Boomtown Casino in Harvey and the Treasure Chest riverboat casino in Kenner described their damage as minor and said they hoped to reopen soon - Boomtown in as early as two and a half weeks, if allowed.

Harrah's downtown land casino in New Orleans wasn't damaged by Katrina, but it sits in a city under a mandatory evacuation order that likely won't open to residents or tourists for months. Harrah's, closed since Aug. 29, continues to pay its state taxes even though it's shuttered as part of a contract that requires a minimum tax payment to the state each year.

The other gambling operations don't have such a requirement. The shutdown of the three riverboats costs the state an estimated $169,800 a day, or about $5 million a month.

Employees with the riverboat casinos and Harrah's still are collecting paychecks, though with varying promises of how long those checks will keep coming if the casinos stay closed. The Belle of Orleans has pledged to pay its employees for at least 30 days, and Harrah's has assured its workers of at least three months of paychecks.

Some parent companies are offering workers temporary jobs at other casinos, and several casinos still were trying to track down all their employees. Hernandez, with the Belle of Orleans, said he was extremely concerned about what the near total devastation of eastern New Orleans would do to the casino, since that area provided most of the boat's gamblers.

The gambling board on Tuesday suspended a rule requiring video poker operators in parishes affected by Hurricane Katrina to give up their video poker licenses if their machines aren't operating for 30 days or more. The suspension will last for 120 days and can be extended.

Alan Smurfit, who sold his Dublin-based packaging company for € 3.9-billion two years ago, has renounced retirement in favour of playing the international poker circuit - with spectacular success. He beat roofing contractor David Clark in an exciting heads-up climax.

The pair had outplayed a strong field of 125 experts and online qualifiers, including snooker celebrities Jimmy White, Mark Williams and Ken Doherty, actor Michael Greco, actor Terrence Maynard, PGA golf pro Sam Torrance, and a host of poker professionals.

Smurfit's first prize was £51,700, presented by www.CelebPoker.com . Clark's second prize was £25,800 and the third prize of £14,000 went to Charalambos Xanthos, better known in the poker world as Bambos.

The key hand occurred when Smurfit was low on chips when the table was four-handed. He went all-in with 6-5 off-suit, and when the board gave him 7-9-8 for a straight, he was back in contention.

"It was a thrill to win," he said afterwards. "Not so much for the money, but for the excitement of winning!"

Alan Smurfit, 63, lives in Dublin, and is best-known as an Omaha player, winning the recent £50,000 Omaha tournament at the Victoria Sporting Club. He is just back from Las Vegas, where he played in the
World Series of Poker.

David Clark, 45, from Little Maplestead, near Halsted, Essex, runs a roofing and scaffolding company, but manages to play poker three or four times a week. He attempted to qualify for the Palm Beach Classic online at www.celebpoker.com , but when he did not manage to win a place, bought in for £1000.

Charalambos Xanthos, 61, better known as Bambos, comes from Cyprus and ran a successful hotel business in Paddington. He is now a full-time poker professional, playing every day, mostly at the Victoria Sporting Club.

Chris Satchell, general manager of the game developer group, Microsoft Xbox, and John Cahill, director, mobile games, Yahoo!, will deliver keynote addresses at the 2005 Game Developers Conference Europe (GDC Europe).
